Can I start by wishing you all health and happiness for the New Year. Let's hope that 2022 is an improvement on 2021 and that dancing gets back to normal!
This is a bit of a bumper edition as I did not create a blog in December.
For those of you who enjoy Take the Floor, the Christmas edition featured Phil Cunningham and friends with their Christmas concert. The New Year edition featured Ian Cathcart and his band, and the programme this Saturday will feature Jim Lindsay, these programmes can be found here
I hope that despite the restrictions you enjoyed your Christmas and New Year celebrations, if you enjoy a ceilidh then you might like the BBC Alba Ceilidh to bring in the New Year, which was broadcast live from Lewis, so long as you don't mind that it is Gaelic and subtitled, but you do not need to understand Gaelic to enjoy the music! At Headington we enjoyed our usual traditional ceilidh, and were entertained by several people, I thought you might enjoy this song from Phil Powell - it is known as "The Massacre of MacPherson" and I have subsequently discovered that I have the music in the fabulous "Scottish Students' Songbook" which is a late Victorian publication, the song exaggerates the perception of Highland feuds, and Phil certainly had us all laughing! I am sure most of you know how differently Hogmanay is celebrated in Scotland, but here is one of the traditions you may not know about, which is the Fireballs ceremony at Stonehaven. The event was cancelled last year and this year, but here is a clip from the TV programme "Coast" showing what happens.
And for your entertainment, the late, great Rikki Fulton from his Scotch and Wry show, which was a must-see on Hogmanay, this is the Driving School.
If you want to see an old Hogmanay programme, here is one broadcast by STV back in 1993, It was written by Alex Norton, and has a host of stars of the time, Johnny Beattie, Dorothy Paul, Andy Cameron, Ronnie Browne (from the Corries) and many others. It is an hour long.
