Well, to my surprise October has come and gone in a flash, so there was no blog last month! Is that because dancing has finally started again here in Oxford? There has been the Oxford Ball, with about 80 dancers in Headington Girls' School, a great night with live music, although too many people must have been watching their waistlines as, (almost unbelievably) I had to take some trifle home!! I am recovering from attending the London Branch Day School, a day of classes, with an evening dance, and because there was a Musicians' Day School, we had fantastic music in the evening, with over a dozen musicians on stage, lead by Jim Lindsay. There were also many entertaining ceilidh items, and Oxford Branch featured heavily with music from Lesley, a Lancashire clog dance form Christine Jeffery, a recitation by James Fairbairn and Gaelic singing from Alice Stainer. I was very glad that the clocks went back on Saturday night, so that I had extra time to recover!
As we are now firmly in autumn, here is a lovely photo taken at the Queen's View near Pitlochry, overlooking Loch Tummel.
As usual, there has been fabulous music on BBC Scotland's "Take the Floor", not least of which was the first new live recording in a long time, featuring Nicol McLaren. There are also new live recordings from Liam Stewart, and Ewan Galloway. This Saturday the programme will feature a new live recording from John Carmichael who is still going strong at over 80, he has been broadcasting live on Facebook so those of you who use Facebook can see him play - (look for Carmichaels Ceilidh).
Some funnies from Diana:
Food for thought - Why
... do we leave cars worth thousands of pounds in the driveway, and fill the garage with junk?
... do people order double cheeseburgers with diet Coke?
... do banks leave vault doors open, and chain the pens to the counter?
Ever wonder
Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why you never see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"?
Why is "abbreviated " such a long word?
Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a "broker"?
And finally some links to some entertainment:
Here is Hungarian fiddler Roby Lakatos, playing Czardas:
And here he is again, playing the theme from the film "Schindler's List":
And for Stanley Baxter fans (I have shared the first one before, but it is a good one)!:
